Your Sleep Habits — Uncovered

Your Sleep Habits — Uncovered

The way you sleep is as individual as you are. On your back, your side, cuddled under a down quilt, or with no blanket at all. Some pets share the bed, while other pet owners wouldn’t dream of it.

How do you get your 7 hours of sleep each night? Is TruLabs SLEEP in the picture? See how your sleep habits compare to other Americans.

Good night, sweet pet

Nearly half of U.S. adults, 46%, allow their pets to share their beds, and half of those people say they sleep better with their animal companions. Sharing a bed with a pet is slightly more common among women than men and among younger adults. In fact, 70% of adults over age 65 report they never sleep with a pet.

Most people sleep with a pillow; on average 2.2 pillows. But some adults have rediscovered how sleeping with a teddy bear or other stuffed animal can reduce anxiety and help them transition into a restful state.

When and how we sleep

Some people don’t sleep well at night but nap during the day. Only 7% of adults nap every day, but over 80% said they took a nap in the last three months. Older adults nap more often but for shorter durations.

According to The National Center for Biotechnology Information, we sleep on our sides 54.1% of the time, on our backs 37.5%, and on our stomachs 7.3%.

But how you sleep isn’t as important as how long you sleep. Unfortunately, 1 in 3 Americans (35%) sleep less than 7 hours at night, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

If you have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, TruLabs SLEEP can help. Our SLEEP formula combines the amino acid GABA, magnesium, melatonin, valerian, and passionflower. These plant-based sleep aids have been used for centuries to promote relaxation and sleep.

What we do during sleep

People snore, walk, and even talk in their sleep. Here are the numbers, for adults in the U.S., according to surveys by the Sleep Foundation and other researchers:

  • 32% snore; of those, 20.6% have been diagnosed with sleep apnea.
  • 66.8% talk in their sleep.
  • 22.4% have experienced sleepwalking.
  • On average, we spend about two hours per night dreaming.
  • REM sleep makes up 20% to 25% of total sleep.
  • 69% of men and 76% of women (40 and older) wake up to go to the bathroom at least once each night.

 And when we don’t sleep

CDC surveys found that sleep-deprivation results in 38% of people nodding off during the day, with 1 in 20 adults falling asleep at the wheel in the past month.

This type of short sleep duration is slightly higher among men (35.4) than women (34%). Geographically, the problem affects the fewest people in Colorado (29.3%) and the most in West Virginia (42.8%), with Texas coming in above average at 34.7%.

Before we sleep

Though sleep doctors suggest we avoid electronic devices for at least 30 minutes before bedtime, a SleepFoundation.org survey found that 52.7% of respondents said they watch TV before bed. The second most popular pre-bedtime ritual was to shower or bathe. About half of the adults who wash up say it helps them sleep.

Doctors also advise not eating large meals at bedtime, but on average, adults snack before bedtime 3.9 nights each week.

Your ability to sleep can be enhanced by having a comfortable sleeping environment — quiet, dark, and cool. Still, only 53.2% of adults sleep with their bedroom windows closed, and 60.9% sleep with their doors closed.

TruLabs SLEEP supports falling asleep faster and waking up refreshed without grogginess. When you sleep well, you’ll feel healthier, more energetic, and more productive — and may even live longer.

Sweet dreams!
